Erwin, Dr. Mark

Dr. Mark Erwin graduated with his Bachelors in 1980, became a Doctor of Chiropractic in 2004 and went on to receive a PhD in Medical Science at the Institute of Medical Science, University of Toronto . He is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto and a Staff Scientist in the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery and is cross-appointed to The Spine Programme of Toronto Western Hospital. He is also an Executive Committee Member of University of Toronto’s Spine Programme and is an Adjunct Associate Professor, Research with the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. Among his many awards, he has received two Connaught Scholarships and two Merit Awards from The Institute of Medical Science at The University of Toronto, Travel ward for Excellence in Arthritis Research from the Canadian Arthritis Network and more recently the Homewood Professorship for research contributions. He has been a recipient of a Canadian Institutes of Health Research/Canadian Chiropractic Association Senior Research Award and he was appointed the second chiropractic research Chair in Canada in 2003 at the University of Toronto where he holds the CCRF Scientist in Disc biology a position co-funded by the Canadian Chiropractic Association and the University Health Network with contributions from the Krembil Neuroscience Programme and the Arthritis and Autoimmunity Research Council Foundation. Dr. Erwin’s research is funded by peer-reviewed funding from sources such as the AO-North America, Synthes Corporation and the Skoll Foundation.

Dr. Erwin is a member of a number of medical and scientific organizations including the Canadian Chiropractic Association, the Canadian Chiropractic Research Foundation, the North American Spine Society, the Orthopaedic Research Society, AO-Spine International and the American Association of Orthopaedic Medicine.

Dr. Erwin’s research is principally focussed upon translational cellular/molecular approaches to degenerative disc disease and related disorders of connective tissues.
